Overview
What smoke chamber parging does
Many smoke chambers were built with corbelled, stepped brick that was never smoothed. Those ledges catch creosote and create turbulence that can hurt draft.
Parging applies a heat-resistant mortar over the smoke chamber walls to create a smooth, sealed surface. The result is easier cleaning, better airflow, and a tighter barrier between hot gases and your home.

Signs your smoke chamber needs attention
- Smoke rolling back into the room
- Heavy creosote buildup just above the damper
- An inspection found gaps, cracks, or open joints in the smoke chamber
- Stepped, rough brick visible above the damper

Smoke Chamber Repair & Parging FAQ
Why is my fireplace smoking even after a cleaning?
Smoking can be caused by several things: a rough smoke chamber, an undersized flue, a closed or damaged damper, or pressure issues in the house. An inspection helps identify the cause.
